George Orwell : Animal Farm (Review)
We are living in the 21st century, the century we proclaim to be the most advanced, literate, independent, socially equal and what not. But I was amazed when I went through this book as I could easily relate those things which were mentioned by the author in 1945 actually existed even today. When we talk about equality we believe that all men, women, religion, caste, and color to be as equal. But the question is, "Is it really so?" Are we still not facing the communalism in the society?
The book revolves around the story on the same issue. We, humans, have a very common tendency of suppressing the weaker section by the powerful one and impose its beliefs on them. The author George Orwell has beautifully explained this in his book.
The story starts when on an animal farm all the animals collectively decide to rebel against the human's atrocity. It was found that they use animals according to their need and later slaughter them when the requirement is over. All the animals were quite upset and motivated to start the rebel against their master. There were many creatures introduced in the fable but the pig was represented as the most literate and intelligent creature. All other animals were under the influence of the pigs and followed them as their leader.
Sooner they got their independence. They started their whole new life. All the animals were very pleased that now they would work for themselves. All animals were to be treated equally and they did not have to work under humans anymore.
They even made some rules for themselves and called them as Seven Commandments:
1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
3. No animal shall wear clothes.
4. No animal shall sleep in a bed.
5. No animal shall drink alcohol.
6. No animal shall kill any other animal.
7. All animals are equal.
But later politics ruined them when one of the pigs overthrew the other and claimed himself as their sole leader. He got all the power and support of other animals on the farm. He knew how to manipulate things and how to make fool of others.
He later broke all the laws according to his convenience. He had started sleeping on the bed, wore clothes, drank alcohol, made some human friends, sold hen's eggs and sent a horse to get slaughtered for making money. Very cunningly he persuaded all the animals on that farm that it could be done if required.
He treated all the pigs and dogs superior to other animals and even executed others if anyone rebelled.
In last the story ends in the same place from where it had started. Humans were back on the farm and the life was again what it was before.
It was altogether a beautiful fable to read. It shows the reality of life that how some powerful people disintegrate the weaker section of the society and use them for their political benefits.
