Richard Bach : Jonathan Livingston Seagull (Review)

A decent fable, written by Richard Bach, based on the life of a Gull who lived on the shore.
The main aim of their life was to collect food for their survival.
The story is a message to all those who follow their passion irrespective of what society thinks about them. There is a basic human tendency which complies with Newton's first law that a body remains in the original state unless external force applied. Whenever one tries to do anything new and innovative, people misjudge him and try to demotivate him.
This message is beautifully described through the life of a similar Gull who wanted to lead a different life than his flock.
The Gull only wanted to fly as every day was the last day of its life.

After a lot of practice and hard work, it finally succeeded to attain a record speed. But owing to the tendency of their flock, they ousted the Gull.
But as the saying goes, "God helps those who help themselves", the Gull never left its path and worked vigorously for its passion and desire. In the same way, when we desire to achieve something, we meet a lot of people whose basic aim is to demotivate and bring us down person to their level. But one must never lose the hope and spirit of fighting against the odds in life.

As the story proceeds the Gull met with another flock of Gull which lead their life on their own rules and unbounded by the society and their orthodox culture. The Gull learned and evolved there and became the fastest among them. It finally attained what it dreamt of. In the same way, one needs to follow the path until he reaches the final point because that only will give him the satisfaction nothing else.

The most beautiful part of the story is when the Gull finally decided to come back to its native land so that it can persuade other Gulls also how to overcome the challenges of life and follow their passion. Many people in life, being very talented and unique do not pursue their passion just because of the social stigma.
But we also have those examples where many people chose their life according to their passion and become successful in bringing a huge change in the society. More importantly, they change the mindset of the people which is very necessary.

Being skilled one can change his life but to change the life of the masses one needs to have leadership qualities. We lack leaders because of the tendency that no one wants to change but everybody wants the change.
We should all look upto Mahatma Gandhi's words- "Be the change you want to see in the world".

This story is very short with lack of humor and climax but the message is very strong and we must try to convince ourself that we can do it and we have to do it.

  1. Nicely explained in less words.

You are right, beautiful part is when gull comes back & shares & tries to persuade others. People achieve good things after so much hard work ,overcoming inertia ,being bold & courageous and many many other things but most of these people somehow forget to tell others how to be there .
Self reliance & self belief is very necessary for living the life as one desires without social [herd] boundations.

Take the first step it is the hardest of all steps .for me believing more in self is also the first step .
